Home to about 3,000 people and the only captive geyser in the world, Soda Springs, Idaho, is a unique destination to say the least. Part of the Oregon Trail, this community boasts a high quality of life with a storied history.
Residents and visitors alike can appreciate aspects of nature not typically found anywhere else. Soda Springs is named after its thousands of naturally carbonated springs in and around the city.
Geyser Park & Visitor Center is a point not to miss as it’s the location of the only captive geyser in the world. It was discovered in 1937 when drilling for a hot water source to situate a swimming attraction. The drill caused the carbon dioxide gas mixing with water in a chamber to erupt. The geyser is now controlled by a cap and timer allowing it to spew every hour.
Two miles west of the city is Sheep Rock Point. This waypoint has wagon ruts still visible and is where the Oregon Trail forked to guide travelers to either Oregon or California.
