Truly a site to behold, beautiful Sandpoint, Idaho is located next to Idaho’s largest lake, Lake Pend Oreille, and is surrounded by mountains and National Forest in the northern panhandle of the state. County seat of Bonner County, Sandpoint is home to an estimated 2013 population of 7,577 residents according to the US Census Bureau. Because of the natural features and resources afforded to the area, residents and visitors can enjoy Sandpoint’s breath-taking scenery and a wide variety of outdoor recreational activities, including camping, skiing, hunting, fishing, hiking, water sports, and horseback riding.

Before settlers arrived, the Sandpoint area was home to the Native American Kalispel tribe whose “ancestral lands extended across all of Priest and Pend Oreille Lakes, up the Pend Oreille River into Canada, and as far east as Montana.” As early as 1809, fur traders established fur trading and settlements in the area. Not long afterward, railroad companies such as Northern Pacific Railroad, in 1880, and Great Northern Railroad, in 1892, brought more settlers. L.D. and Ella Mae Farmin, agents for Great Northern Railroad, “bought rights to 160 acres along the west edge of Sand Creek and, after ‘proving up’ on homestead property, platted the City of Sandpoint in 1898.” On February 7, 1901, the Village of Sandpoint was incorporated, but its organization and name were changed to the City of Sandpoint by the majority vote of the Village’s “qualified electors” on December 12, 1906.
