Did you know that each year, between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, total household waste in the United States increases by 25%? According to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), household garbage increases “from 4 million tons to 5 million tons” during those few weeks each year. Additionally, greenhouse gas emissions increase due to holiday travel.
There are many simple things we can do to reduce our impact on the environment during the holidays. Some of those things include using LED lights for decorating and only turning them on when someone is there to admire them. Minimize greenhouse gas emissions by carpooling, walking or taking public transit. Forego the wrapping paper by wrapping gifts in reusable bags or boxes. These are just a few of many ways we each can help to reduce our carbon footprint this holiday season and make our holidays a little greener.
