Simple & Green: Solar Panels Becoming a Standard Amenity in New Homes

In a growing number of communities in California, Nevada, Texas, Colorado (and Arizona next month), photovoltaic solar panels are becoming the newest standard amenity in newly constructed homes. According to the Solar Energy Industries Association, “Six of the 10 largest U.S. homebuilders say they now include solar panels in new construction, and consumer demand for them is expected to soar 56 percent nationwide this year.” While solar panels can add $10,000 to $20,000 to the construction cost, installing them during the construction phase is 20% cheaper than lashing the panels to an existing home. CEO, Tom Werner, states that buyers can add the additional expense of solar panels to their mortgages similar to how they may choose to add the cost of other amenities (such as natural material kitchen countertops) into their mortgages.
